Advocate Your Advocates: Grow Your Community Without Buying Reach
Practical ways to engage the people already around your business: employees, partners, thought leaders, and customers, so they carry your message further than ads can.
Start with the community you already have
Before you buy reach, look at who is already close to your business. Colleagues and employees are your first amplifiers: if you have ten people in your company, every post should earn at least ten engagements. Partners, collaborators, and suppliers deserve your public support, because advocating for the people who help you do business strengthens the relationships that help you grow. Thought leaders and influencers your audience already follows are worth engaging with genuinely. And customers respond to unique opportunities and experiences that give them a reason to participate.
Scroll with purpose
Advocating for your advocates is a daily practice, not a campaign. Treat likes, comments, and shares as deliberate acts. Understand content before you like it, and follow the likes of your network to discover what resonates. Think of comments as content in their own right: a thoughtful, well-branded comment shows up in other people's feeds like a small ad, earning targeted reach and frequency for free. Ask questions that inspire conversation. Before sharing anything, ask whether it aligns with your brand values and whether it provides real value to your audience.
Balance what you create with what you share
A healthy content strategy mixes first-party content, what you create, with third-party content, what you share and how you engage. Your own content should educate, inform, or entertain. Know your audience so it resonates, favor quality over quantity, stay authentic and original, keep it concise, and use recurring themes and visuals so it is memorable. Sharing reputable third-party content diversifies your feed, saves resources, exposes your brand to new audiences, and enhances your credibility by association.
Make room for your community to create
User-generated content is some of the most trusted material a brand can earn. Encourage and create space for content created by inspired customers, employees, sponsors, and partners. A customer sharing their genuine experience reaches people who would scroll past your ad. Your job is to make participation easy and to recognize the people who contribute.
Optimize for organic reach
Small, consistent habits compound. Build a list of 10 to 20 hashtags and hashtag groups that make your content discoverable by topic and location. Keep a list of 10 to 20 accounts you can routinely tag so your posts are seen by other accounts and their audiences. Then put it into practice: add new hashtags and tags to a few of your existing posts and watch what happens to engagement.
Save paid advertising for when community is maximized
Paid digital advertising has real benefits: targeted reach to net-new audiences, immediate frequency, measurable results, and an edge over competitors who rely on organic alone. But self-serve ad platforms are typically opaque and offer limited control. Maximize what community can earn you first, and when you are ready to pay for reach, work with a professional who will put your message in places your audience already trusts.
